Basically, to summarize, it's like this:
The entire neighbourhood was on fire, except for the US. The US watched and did nothing as the fire crept up their yard, then their driveway, then their front porch. It is now spread throughout the house and the US is panicking. So instead of calling the fire department in advance, to get the big trucks out and spraying down houses before they start on fire, the US is now sucking up every fire extinguisher and smoke alarm and fire-resistant garb in the world. They are paying 3-4x the price, with the bulk of buying by private actors (because their health care operates on a for-profit basis, and making margins on lives is par for the course and completely unremarkable). Nobody else can get fire extinguishers or smoke alarms because the fat orange retard at the top of the hill is buying them all, while simultaneously closing off the roads to the local WalMart strip-mall, and screaming at the top of his lungs that there is no fire.
Some in the neighbourhood are calling it theft, or considering it an act of aggression. It is just a prime example of an irrational outcome as a result of various actors taking individually rational actions - trying to secure needed supplies. A real "tragedy of the commons" problem. The US in particular is being criticized because, before their house caught on fire, they were holding giant block parties and inviting all their friends and calling them retards for worrying about fires, and are now making it extremely difficult to arrange any sort of response that doesn't value lives according to economic power per capita. Rather than organizing a neighbourhood committee to dole out masks and medical supplies according to some logical scheme, the US is letting third-party resellers dictate terms, because they can afford it. Well, nobody else can, so they're getting f**k. Now the Europeans are doing the exact same f**k thing, and so whenever they cry, remember they are full of shit, and also cowardly, barbaric, weak and pathetic. Buy up all those German masks and gowns, who cares, they wouldn't think twice about depriving you of those things. But considering you share a f**k duplex, you may not want to do that to Canada.
