This pandemic has done more to reveal peoples character than any event in my lifetime. Some folks you would expect to be breathlessly stupid are instead reasonably cautious, while others you would imagine would overreact and demand a military-enforced lockdown are instead marching in groups complaining about wearing masks. You can really tell who has any kind of real dignity or bearing, who is able to put things into the proper perspective, who is able to sacrifice a little bit for the greater good. The biggest correlation I noticed with being stupid about the pandemic is conservatism and religion, but after some additional thought, the truth is that these folks are just the loudest and most preachy. Across the political and spiritual spectrum you see morons, deeply selfish and insane morons, who will make our and their own lives worse and will gladly sacrifice thousands of people if it means getting back to the gym.
In my personal life, the results have been pretty shocking, and I don't really desire the knowledge I have now. I'm very proud that everyone in my immediate family, and even all the way out to first and second cousins, are being sensible. But I've seen alot of friends reveal just how insanely shallow and weak they are.
In the US, the government has done nothing for its people. So I can at least understand why people are panicky and insane and angry. But here, the government has been extremely generous, and people are getting by without going bankrupt or losing health insurance. So it has been especially disheartening to see the carelessness and disregard.
It is abundantly clear that our education system has utterly failed to prepare adults for modern life. We need a political and social and ideological revolution. We will never be able to make the changes we need dragging 20% of people around, kicking and screaming. If 80% of us make some changes or sacrifice a bit to protect the environment, for instance, that 20% will be burning tires for fun in their backyard.
