the average age of the fleet is 16 years old. the operational lifespan is typically 30 years. these are investments that need to be made now. of course the navy needs to be updated. a strong navy (with navy planes + marines) and space fleet should be the top spending items of the military of this country. other things, like army stationed in germany or whatever, that should be what gets slashed

This is a specifically offensive weapon. Its all about shelling land targets.

I can get behind the idea of a 21st century destroyer...but this seems a little pointless if there are only going to be 3 of them, and that's assuming even those don't get slashed. As I said before, it will work nicely as a technical test bed.

I think the LCS's have a lot more legitimacy.

In Libya it was all about guided missiles and air strikes. No need whatsoever for a floating artillery platform. Plain old Burke class DD's and subs can handle it.
