Anyone who remembers when the railways were nationally owned/operated knows that it was an absolute disaster. British Rail was a standing joke for incompetence.
The privatisation was done badly, and for that the Major government was at fault. The track owners and train operators should not have been separated. The problem we now have is that all the franchisees are also bus operators who want to do in the railways once and for all.
That is what should be looked at and dealt with.

You are over simplifying in order to defend your nationalising agenda. Sorry to burst your bubble, but service has improved massively since the days of BR, and the problem with subsidies is due to poorly written contracts (blame ministers for that, throughout the last government, and it seems nothing has changed).
The railways were far better before nationalisation, you cannot claim that privatisation in itself has caused the problems, you have to look deeper.
