I didn't grow up watching Star Wars like a lot of you did. Never interested me til I had a roommate who was a fanatic and had all the dvds, so I watched it with him. Dude was bitching up a storm telling me how the newer ones had such bad acting and were a stain on the original "classic" three. Well, my take was that the acting was nothing to be proud of in any of them. He also complained that the newer ones were lame because the whole thing was too "geared for kids". Again, the whole series, new and old, seemed like something geared for kids to me.
In summation, I think most people hate the new ones because they grew up loving the old ones as kids and the new ones couldn't live up to the child-like amazement and nostalgia they associate with the old ones, but in reality, they're all pretty much in the same category of mediocrity.
