Nobody can legitimately claim one as being more legit "art" than the other, or any other genre, however.

Those two statements are in no way contradictory.

One is shit. One is not. Both are absolutely art. There are people out there who might disagree on which one is shit, but that doesn't change the fact that they are both legitimately art.

We have been talking about legitimacy in degrees (e.g more legit art). Art is something aesthetically beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance. If a work is shitty (i.e. ugly, unappealing, or of ordinary significance) then it is less in accordance with the established rules, principles, or standards of art than other works. Shitty art is, by definition, less legitimate than good art.

If I tell you my favorite color is blue, and that I think green is shit, that does not mean I think green is less legitimate as a color. It means only that I don't like it. Any other meanings you choose to invent from that...purely your responsibility. I've got no control over any speculation on your part.

There is no way to "prove me wrong" on that. Firstly, its purely a matter of preference, and so is not actually correct or incorrect. Secondly, you are incorrect about what I think. I know this because I can hear my thoughts and you can't. You can't "prove" anything about what I think or consider.

That's the problem here. I said something very specific...but you are convinced I am thinking something else. And now you are out to "prove" what you think I'm thinking? This thread delivers.

And no. Cars are all cars. There are no subtle degrees of reality where an object is more or less an object. I think a Lincoln MKX is a hideous, shitty, joke of a car. I consider a basic Kia far more desirable. Both are obviously equally legit as cars. The guy who prefers the MKX might consider the Kia as a piece of shit.

Irritating thing about trying to nail down a particular thing as being better than something else. Its never anything more than your own opinion. Its the reason people drag rusted hulks out of fields to fix them up.

You'll never be any more able to prove one form of art as being more legitimately art than you can prove one favorite color as being more legitimately a color. You can keep trying though. Gives me something to do while I watch reruns of Lost in my recliner.
