What exactly is a hick state of mind? Please elaborate.
I don't know what to tell you, just because something has been around for centuries doesn't mean it is in every year. People have been wearing fur for millennia, but fur isn't in every year (it is this year though). It sounds like you just bought a pea coat. Let me reassure you that you'll be able to wear it just fine and no one is going to give it a second thought.
Those of us with a more sophisticated senses of style want people to give us a second though. Pea coats come in an out of style all the time. They reach a saturation point in which everyone owns them and then they go out of style because the trendsetters are looking for something different. They come back in style once everyone forgets about them and the followers have killed the previous style.
