Not every single GOP politician is apeshit insane, it just seems that way cause the crazy ones are the loudest and make a good juicy story for the media. They'll come to an agreement with the fiscal cliff now that the POTUS election is over.

I don't think anyone disputes Romney was the best candidate. Your argument seems to be he was a weak candidate, but he was the best they had. That means something. The best candidate, in a very favorable economic environment, got crushed. Demographically, republicans lost to a black guy 2 elections in a row in 2 southern states. Dems protected every senate seat, many in very red states.
The republicans won't have an electoral context much more favorable than this, and yet they lost on all fronts! That's huge.

Also, this election invalidates republican obstructionism. They tried to styme Obama for 2 years to get him out of office, and it failed. They will have to be more conciliatory this term because as the economy picks up, they can't afford to be the party on the outside looking in.
