There is absolutely no question that online debate forums sharpened my irl debate skills by exponential factors. As cheesy and trite as it can be sometimes... and even without any kind of rule set or structure... you still over the years, come away with an ability to reference events and concepts that far exceeds any pedantic debate class.

I never argue politics on facebook because some people take that shit to heart and don't get over it, so I don't see why I should take a position and debate it that will be forever recorded on the internets next to my IRL name. The reward of "winning" on facebook is not worth the possible consequences of how others may react to it.

I do like debating IRL but only to the extent that someone else is willing to discuss it and not catch feelings. Causing others to catch feelings is way less fun IRL.
