Prometheus gets a bad rap. I actually put off watching it for months just because I was so sure it would be a mess, but it was actually a pretty fair film, with an excellent aesthetic. The plot didn't make much sense, and it was completely missing the horror elements, but it was at least interesting.
A lot of the problem with scifi now is, I agree, the attempt to make it family viewing. They are pushing really hard for that young demo, and so you wind up with teenaged leads...which torpedoes the whole thing for any sort of serious audience. Remember that thing on Fox about going back to colonize the cretaceous or whatever? With the dinosaurs? The pilot fell flat on its face because fully half of it was about, "Oh my life is over, my father doesn't understand me!". It was awful.
I just don't get it, because I was a little kid cheerfully watching old and bald Patrick Stewart boldy go all over the damn place, and I didn't give too shits about the one young character on the show. Network execs don't get that young people aren't actually hateful of old people. They form a full blown cult over Steven Colbert, for crying out loud.
I'm trying really hard to give Revolution a chance, but it suffers from a too-young cast as well.
