I think its a little of both. There really are a lot of parallels, especially in imagery. I mean...the giant spirally tree and the blue glow and the giant boxy machine knocking down trees...even the central themes and interplay of parallel characters.

again, that's true of a lot of movies and avatar.
the "look how similar it is to other things" meme is pretty contagious and for whatever reason i don't know why. it's a pet peeve i have with criticism of it given how, as i said, pretty much every movie is based on something else.

No, its not that general. In the case of the tree for example its almost like Cameron literally cloned it.
