Honestly, you can't hate on OR love American food. We really have so few dishes that are our own that you cannot call it a cuisine. Deep fried butter? That's a carnival attraction - no restaurant actually sells it. Same with things like corn dogs and other novelty dishes. America simply adapts food from other cultures.
For instance, cajun and creole (there are differences) food is really based on an amalgamation of French, Caribbean, and a touch of African. Southwestern is obviously from south-of-the-border. In fact, if we had a single cuisine that we might be able to call American, it would be Chinese. Because what we have here is NOTHING like what they have in China. But I digress...
Honestly, one of my favorite (currently) foods it Vietnamese. I think it's awesome how they've blended southeast Asian and French like that. Totally unique.
