These conversations need to be had sans dilluded constitutionalism. The founders created the constitution, and made the compromises that they made, based on the current political atmosphere. We wouldn't kick gay marriage down the road 20 years because it's strategically convenient to carry southern states in the election. They did it with slavery so that they had more than 8 states to make a union out of. They had to concern themselves with protecting self-governance because they had monarchies to reject. We don't.
