Maybe if people could attempt to seperate John McCain the GOP presidential candidate from John McCain the veteran, they might be able to give his actions their proper due.
McCain put his own life on the line for his fellow sailors in a selfless manner. That puts him in hero status for me.

Hit the nail on the head there. The fact that his heroism is under attack because he is a Republican is very swift boaty. Surprising how Kerry is a victim and McCain is overrated.

considering who his dad was the fact that he decided to become a naval aviator alone makes him a hero.

Perhaps some see his heroic actions as tainted by their context. After all he wasn't dropping lollipops during his 23 missions over North Vietnam.
