Privatisation was stupid. It would only have worked if each train company had their own track, which is, of course, ludicrous.

Times have changed.
There is no way of going back to those little local services, each separate from the other and operating on their own bit of track - rather like local bus services.
Private railways stopped working well and began losing money as the world became smaller, which is why they were nationalised in the first place.

They were nationalised for ideological reasons, not because they were losing money.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

They've become better since the were re-privatised. Passenger numbers are much higher and the trains are much more comfortable.

If they were failing and losing money (I've seen no evidence to support this claim by the way) then they should have been allowed to fail, and cease operating.
