Israel strikes back at Palestine - closer to war?

I'm biased. As a Western Liberal I'm going to have a preference for the Western Liberals. I'm not a fan of Israel's "kill a roach with a shot-gun" and their continued expansion of settlements on the West Bank is nothing short of criminal. However I really can't bring myself to sympathize that much with the Palestinian position. In short the various Palestinian authorities have been waging total war on Israel since the 1930s and been getting sonned, yet even as the conflict has gotten more and more lop-sided the Palestinian authorities still insist on waging total war.

Plus you also have the issue that Israel is still winning. They've secured peace with every one of their Arab neighbors, largely through military victory, and great improved the security of the state of Israel itself...to the point where 3 Israelis being killed in a rocket attack is now a big deal (Israelis being killed in terrorist attacks, raids, and skirmishes used to be a pretty common thing).

If Palestinians were to simply take Israel's violence without response it's likely virtually no one would find out about it. When Hamas responds with rocket fire it is then all over the news. Israel then looses even more global sympathy and support when it exacerbates its violence, in this recent episode, now having killed over a hundred civilians, many women and children. Israel went from being virtually unopposed in its aggressions to being essentially a pariah nation. The invasion of Lebanon really altered global perception and every invasion and military action since that time has only further altered global perception. Israel is loosing the war for popular support. In the modern world that is the real war that carries the most significance in the end. Although many times it may seem otherwise, we no longer live in the time of Genghis Khan.
