You can't ignore it though.
Who wouldn't care about what happens to them after you've turned 65 (or 70)? People who will never have to worry about that. So it's quite easy for them to rail against the existence of pensions when they don't need them.
Unless you really think there's a whole country of people who consciously want to be on their own come retirement. Remember, SS was created for a reason, to address a problem.
If we get rid of SS, the problem doesn't go away with it.

SS has been successful and amazingly on target for a 70 year old program. It has assisted in supporting retirees exactly as it was advertised, designed, and implimented. It will continue to do so , albeit at a slightly lower rate... for many years to come.
The entire debate around it is probably just a smokescreen for other political tomfoolery. There is nothing to debate.
