You can't ignore it though.
Who wouldn't care about what happens to them after you've turned 65 (or 70)? People who will never have to worry about that. So it's quite easy for them to rail against the existence of pensions when they don't need them.
Unless you really think there's a whole country of people who consciously want to be on their own come retirement. Remember, SS was created for a reason, to address a problem.
If we get rid of SS, the problem doesn't go away with it.
