just to clarify, environmentalists are typically pro-density. high density cities have the lowest per capita carbon footprints, usually under half those in the sprawly southeast cities. also the safest big cities in the US also tend to be the densest - NYC and LA for example.
i'm not opposed to rural communities and understand why some prefer them. only thing i really hate is suburbs. completely useless IMO. either go full urban or full rural.

Only problem with urban sprawl is inefficiency and needing cars and gigantic highways, and of course the repair and maintenance on those.
