post-humans will become a reality and we're at the start of this brave new world. it's genetic and technological enhancements to the baseline human form that changes it from what it was into something new. we have GMO crops, we have GMO animals, we'll have GMO humans. and as humanity goes out to the stars these changes will becomes so vast that you might come across a different posthuman and think it's an alien. and who wouldn't, considering they changed their bone structure to hollow so that they could fly and call themselves the archangels while you live in some sort of steampunkish looking machine the size of optimus prime and have very few biological remnants left. and really, it is alien from you, but you both share the same lineage.

I hope you don't think that mess refutes anything.

The computational resources are not an issue, as Saz pointed out, given the rapid growth in technical knowledge in the future computational resources will probably be infinite for all practical purposes. So that can be thrown out. (And I have several certifications so I do know how computers actually work)

As to why someone would run the simulation. It could be any number of reasons. Why do people study archaeology? Why do they believe in religions? Either of these avenues provide a perfectly viable reasoning as to why someone would run the simulation.

Why do people climb mountains? Because they are there. Shit, it may be the simulation is something as simple as mankind's answer to the question of mortality. Maybe they felt sorry for their ancestors who died before the technical advance that allowed them immortality so they figured out a way for us to "live forever".

That's no argument at all. And Putnam's refutation hinges on the idea that the simulacrums produced by simulation for the brain in the vat would be of objects that are unknown to the BIV's. This is not so if the simulation is of actual people who lived and whose simulacrums are endowed with their actual memories. They would know what all of the things they observe in the simulation were.

He's basically saying that if qualia presents something to our mind that we recognize, then in the simulation recognition could only be due to pareidolia and that this proves the hypothesis wrong. But if the BIVs were actually at one time human beings in a world like the one we currently experience then we would recognize all of the objects because we are actually quite familiar with their qualities. Qualities that have been recreated in the simulation.
