A band that re-trenches and reinvents itself almost every couple of albums is formulaic? Did they stop making albums after Pablo Honey or something because they actually have songs written after Creep.

Not that it's going to happen, but I suggest catching them live if you think they're bland. One of the better lives acts I've ever seen (more than once).

G, I'm with you. Also find them blase. They're not reinventing themselves every album. It's the same people, playing the same instruments. Reinventing yourself means moving from gospel to ska, from rap to country, or from yodeling to bluegrass. Simply messing with beats and equalizer settings isn't a reinvention. Metallica tried to reinvent themselves. But, while you can certainly tell that it's different, it's still hard rock.

However, I reserve my hate for Coldplay. Ripping off Joe Satriani like that.

Your exception proves the rule. Even when they aren't formulaic, they are depressingly predictable.

It's as if someone sat down and said "let's make the safest atmospheric rock song ever."

Predictable off-tune horns, bad sampling, lots of noise to get people on edge... Ooooh, wow, edgy.
