U2 had some good ideas... just didn't work to continue to be a good band.
The Bangles ~ backstreet boys ~ monkeys etc etc
80's overall however were amazing.

Keeping in mind this is all subjective opinion (obviously), I'd argue that it is formulaic in the same way that using algorithms to generate random data is formulaic. It follows a predictable logic, even if the sound/result can be described as "unusual."
