The one TV show that I think exemplifies space opera is Babylon 5. The whole plot arc was written even before they filmed the pilot.

Ya, the fourth season was a combination of what was supposed to be in 4 and 5. Then they got that 5th season and were like....wtf. Ok now what?

I was actually more into the whole civil war side of it. Where Babylon 5 declared independence, and then later had to take sides to overthrow the regime on Earth. It was kinda tacked onto the end of season 4, and it really should have been the entirety of season 5. Secession from earth and civil war were major plot points, and deserved better development. I liked the whole Londo/g'kar thing as well. Those two stole the show IMO.
