The niche that life can exist within is relatively fragile. A few degrees of temperature or pressure change and that's it. Our presence has become great enough in the last 85 years that profound changes are occurring because of it. The world's population went from 2 Billion to nearly 8 billion within that span of time.
Our effect on the planet is probably comparable to that of a largish asteroid or comet hitting it. We've caused about the equivalent number of species to die off as other mass extinction events caused by such a strike.
