In the past, I've been very critical of police and their role in our society. I've always felt that as the people who we pay to enforce the law, they are not held accountable to it themselves enough. I also think the professional culture of many police departments encourages a mentality in which looking out for your fellow officers, regardless of circumstance, comes before looking out for the interests of the public you're supposed to "serve and protect". I could go on with gripes, but I think my point is clear.
That said, it's just stupid to make a blanket statement about all cops. They're still human beings like the rest of us, which means that some are really shitty people, a tiny few are really good people, and the vast majority are in a gray area. Just like everyone else. I am not at all attracted to the idea of being a cop. I have qualms about what they do, but not everyone becomes a cop for the same reason with the same mentality. The authority that comes with the job does unfortunately attract a certain class of egomaniacs with a power complex, but that's not all of them.
