I want to challenge your premise that donating to more than one will be inefficient due to admin cost. These organizations are set up to accept small donation efficiently. If you can't decide, go ahead and split the money up among your top two or three.

Make a Wish Foundation.

I've seen firsthand how much the work they do improves the lives of the terminally ill or the permanently ill. It is enough to make you cry really. It may not be solving any great problem, but it is IMO one of the best charities out there.

Your local United Way.

Despite some of the fallout from the National UW several years ago from the CEO etc... it is a good organization that benefits many local small nonprofits (who can't raise enough funds on their own). Give to the UW and you are in effect giving to many, IMO, good NPs in your community. Community volunteers review all the various NP applications for UW funds and spend considerable time looking at what they do and evaluating their needs when determining on how much of your donations to allocate to them.

Another thing to consider is which, if any, charities have positively impacted your life. I donate to epilepsy charities because I used to have it. My dad donates to allergy awareness charities, because he suffered from an undiagnosed allergy for years. Give back to those that helped you.

I have been either lucky or prepared throughout my life, havent had any great needs that didnt get filled from self or family, the only one thats personally affected me at all has been the local humane society, which is where my family has gotten most of it dogs. That is to say, all of the dogs that didnt just show up because someone dumped them nearby.


Emerald, setting up a monthly expense thing is likely to get my name on their list of people to beg, not interested in that. I want to just drop a lump sum and leave them to decide how to spend it.
