Well I'm not disagreeing with you are saying, but.... what am I supposed to say when people all around me, who are engineers, are landing jobs easily in a variety of disciplines? Dude I landed an internship for 6 months making $21.50 an hour, full time work, and I'm not even close to the top of my class and I go to a decent, but 2nd or 3rd in my state public university.
Idk. I'm just sharing my experience.
Maybe things will change eventually and it'll become bloated, but my engineering department still only takes X amount of students per year. It's harder and harder to get in.

The problem is not of the number of graduates but that in the English-speaking world (as is true for most of Europe and North America) we have created a huge, cheap service sector economy. Job allocation is disproportional to meaningful employment. Investments in finance and services drastically outnumber manufacturing, design, and research. In recent years (at least in the US) the service sector growth has started to slow down, probably due to digital electronics, but it's not kept pace with graduation rates.
That said, it should not be public policy to encourage even more people to drop out of these professions and trades. Few service jobs provide as much job security and skills development.
