Wen it comes to elaborating on the economy's role in social life, commodity fetishism, alienation, base-superstructure analysis, and the succession of modes of production in history, Marxian theories remain as useful tools. They are practical and focus on issues that are consistently obfuscated in conventional academia.
The one thing that's dead in the water, though, is dialectical materialism.
