Speaking of gasoline, here's the funny thing. When was the last time you heard of a "Wal-Mart" refinery? Or a "FasTrack" refinery? All those places get their gas from the same place that Shell, Exxon, BP, etc. get their gas.
Want to really have your mind blown? Most of the time, the gasoline you get at a Shell, Exxon or other "brand-name" station wasn't refined at the refinery of the same name. It was done somewhere else, and then that company bought it as "raw gas", added some exotic-sounding chemicals (like "nitrogen" - you know, the stuff that makes up 86% of the atmosphere anyway?), and resold it in their station.
If you want the best gas you can put into your car, find the place with the highest turnover. Gasoline from the refinery is pretty much the same across the board. But, when it sits in the holding tank at your local pik-a-pac it can get contaminated with water, rust particles, dirt, etc. The cleaner the gas, the better. And the cleanest gas spends the shortest time on the trip from refinery to your tank. My local Sam's club goes through 1.5 tanker trucks of gas per day. That's about as good as it gets.
If we want to get into the "alcohol" in gasoline and how it attracts water, I can do that too. I recently researched it for my racing habit. But, if no one is interested...
