Well, I guess that's one area in which WY is more Hippy-Dippy-Do-Da than CA. EVERYONE here reuses their shopping bags. Hell, I've even seen them crocheted into purses at the Farmer's Market. Ya, we have a Farmer's Market that, um, ya runs for 3 hours, once a week during the Warm Season(also know a July and August[well, most of August])

That's the question I usually get when I use them too. "Whacha gonna use fer yer trash then, little lady?" They ask that while checking out my bags. I got the ones that fold down to a 4x6 square and snap shut, ones with the hard bottom that folds up when you flatten them, one even has a little change and money pouch on the inside. But, the ones that really created a Holy Crap Fest in the checkout line was when I told the cashier to be sure to put the frozen stuff in the insulated bags. Mine are the square ones that stand on their own and have zippers around the top. Good Gawd, the cashier, the bagger and the two customers behind me all had to personally check them out before they could bag my groceries.

And that is when I fully realized that I was borned and reared in just about the hickest assed state in the nation. Welcome to Wyoming, where people freak out and are absolutely amazed by reusable shopping bags.

Bah. You can't judge hick-ness by shopping bag habits. Better to quantify that with...average distance to a catfish farm per capita or something.

IDK, but I do think that fascination with an insulated shopping bag(rather than whether or not people use them) rates pretty high up there in hickety dicketyness.

i have a giant bag that holds my other bags which are used as trashbag liners and for dog shit. i have far too many though so i end up throwing away the trash bags. who the hell cares it's a trash bag, just throw it away and make new ones

i didn't know insulated shopping bags exist. i suppose it make sense but its maybe a half hour drive home it's not going to unfreeze. maybe the ice cream sandwhiches will get pushed to one side a bit but it'll be fine (cuz it always is)

you don't need to do a blind study. it's not like you can will the car to do less mpg. you just need to keep a log of the gallons and the odometer when you purchase it and you can figure the rest out, as i'm sure the dude did

I reuse my plastic shopping bags. Show up at the store with them all wadded up in little balls and hand them to the bag boy.

The insulated bags are really just a thin layer of soft foam may a 1/4 of an inch thick. It was nice to have them when I lived in SLC and would go to a couple different places while shopping and they would be nice for the folks here who don't live in town but most of them are already set up with coolers and the stores will give the dry ice for free or at least did back when I was cashiering. When I pay for frozen food, I prefer it still be frozen when I get it home.

I still get the grocery bags at the other store and when I forget mine at the store that gives points. I give the extras to the little neighborhood store near me and they reuse them just as they are.

Oh, forgot about the one I had with dividers in it that is made just for wine/alcohol bottles. It was given away with a purchase of a certain liquor I got a couple of years ago. It holds six bottles and they don't clang because of the dividers and they sit flat in the car.

Although I think it is good to waste as little as possible, I don't use them because I'm a real Eco-freak or whatever. I like the utility of them. They sit flat like paper bags and have handles like the plastics. I can usually carry anywhere from 10-15 bags at once since most of them have handles long enough to put over your shoulder. I really like not having to make multiple trips to the car to bring the stuff inside.
