Direct democracy is a threat to individual liberty. On the state level, it has crippled the budgets of California, Oregon, and Arizona through pie-in-the-sky voter initiatives that lack any common sense. On the federal level, it has birthed SuperPACs, turned money (instead of ideas) into the currency of electoral politics, and has degenerated our electoral process into sound-bites, catch phrases, and kiddy pool logic by reducing the conversation to a level that uneducated mouth-breathers can understand. The romanticism some assign to the concept of each individual powerful enough to vote himself more money, is toxic to this country, its purse, and its integrity.
