In this job market a proper vocational outlet would not reduce students to mopping floors. The 'losers' would be those who pursue the academic track but don't continue forth to college, not those who aren't interested in traditional education. The skills for many good paying jobs could be introduced at the high school level: radiology, carpentry, HAVC repair, mechanical systems, graphic design, etc. By that point you should already thoroughly know algebra, grammar, (some) classics, and geometry anyway.
We shouldn't aspire for some Socratic education drenched in philosophy and literature. Critical thinking is a fine thing, but just emphasizing abstract skills is a disservice to the future generations.
