I never thought I'd see the day Ameriman cites to Class Matters. 
Anyway, that definition relies on self identification as to who is middle class and who is not.
What's wrong with the commonly accepted definition of middle class (ie, the middle)? Isn't it a bit counterintuitive to place the top 2% in the "middle?"
