Additive processing makes parts, not stuff, it has been made into way more than it actually is. Just about everything it does can be done with CNC machines and other rapid prototyping methods that have been around for a very long time.

No, you're right. This shit is right around the corner. Pretty soon we will all have whatever we want because an additive printer is going to just manufacture out of thin air, without any human input, whatever any one of the more than 7 billion inhabitants of the Earth want. That is, pretending the population doesn't increase by an order of magnitude by whenever this scifi situation is realized, pretending that ecological catastrophe is somehow averted, etc.

It's not just additive printing though. It's that and artificial intelligence, solid state, processing power, nanotech, robotics, prosthetics, advanced materials, advanced energy storage, biochemical and biomechanical and a host of other emergent technologies that are going to change everything. The big three game changers will be artificial intelligence, additive processing, and nanotech. But we are also unlocking the secrets of nature like photosynthesis and are able to artificially duplicate the process.

Maybe soon we will build sentient organic bio-machines that fuel themselves with solar power. The possibilities of technical synergy are endless.
