The problem is that as a nation our laws are built on statutory laws that provide no flexibility, its become a mechanical exercise of going by the book by filling in the blanks like the convicted's names. This has led to the demise of common sense when judges in the olden days could be quite flexible in their sentencing.
There needs to be a limit on sentences in an economic standpoint, let's say 10 years should be maximum, anything longer than that should warrant execution to save incarceration costs.
