To be quite honest, this isn't very high on my list. Yeah, I guess if I'm forced to think about it, I agree that the sentence was excessive.

But, in the big picture of things, I'm not unhappy with the taxes that I pay to the state/local authorities. These taxes pay for incarceration. And, we're keeping people who have been convicted of a crime, and would possibly commit another crime, off the streets. That keeps them out of my life.

Sure, I'm aware that these types of sentences might be unfair. But, if you don't want to get treated unfairly, don't commit a crime. If you do, well...

I think I'm about to become fairly unpopular in this thread. There goes my nomination for the January Poster of the Month. While I'm at it, let me also say that I'd support an optional (at the option of the prisioner) euthanasia choice for those with life sentences. If you choose euthanasia, you may decree that half the money the state would have spent incarcerating you go to whatever (within reason) cause you want - your family, charity, etc.

The death penalty ought to be reserved for extreme cases, like war criminals, Richard Nixon, terrorists and traitors. Outside of a narrow set of circumstances, it is both immoral and overly expensive (it actually costs more to execute someone then to incarcerate them for life).

Public humiliation should be brought back. I think it is effective and a good way of punishing non-violent, opportunistic crimes, up to a certain age. I can remember stealing a pack of smokes from a variety store when I was 13... I got caught. No police were called, but I was made by my parents to stand in the store, holding a sign that said "Thief" on it. If asked about it, I was expected to tell the person what I did. It was the most humiliating thing I've ever experienced, and I hated my parents for it... and yet I haven't stolen since.

Corporal punishment is for barbarians, and has no place in modern society.

Sentences for violent crimes need to be increased. I'm thinking 2 years mandatory for assault, 5 if the victim reaches a certain threshold of damage, 10 if the victim is left permanently disabled. Minimum of 10 years for rape, minimum of 15 for murder, minimum of 20 for premeditated murder. No parole. Child molesters are an interesting case, because they have such a high likelihood of reoffending. I have no problem with chemical castration, if proven to work, as well as prison sentences in line with rape and sexual assault.

And let me again point out that when it's the banks robbing US, like with what happened in 2008--zero years sentenced, zero years served, zero charges or convictions.

They robbed U.S. taxpayers of billions of dollars, engaged in fraud and deceit, exploded our debt and threw millions out of their homes.

Not one of them is in jail. They are all still multi-millionaires. Most of them are still running their banks.
