you can use alt-tab all the time. it's a windows function. frankly i don't know how people operate without it

You have windows 7 right? Or even vista? If so, hold down the windows key + tab. That'll probably surprise you.

oh em if you use tabbed browsing, try ctrl-tab for moving between tabs

also shift-X does the opposite (generally for most functions). so as you press alt-tab and keep on pressing tab you go forward. shift-alt-tab goes backward. same with shift-ctrl-tab

if you have 7 you can also use your mouse to pick the one you want, once you bring up the dialog (for alt-tabbing)

Check the options when you start the game, em, you should be able to see it. Or if you have a full keyboard just push the Windows button, like most people do.

fullscreen windowed mode is superior because you can alt tab quickly. if you play in just fullscreen it degrades performance of switching programs (which is what your suggestion is if the default is not windowed mode)

also i agree with comrade: who uses the window button for that? i use window button for like windows + r
