I find his comments and positions on LGBT issues disconcerting at best, though I'm unsure he qualifies as homophobic. He seems to have turned a corner on LGBT issues from what I've read.

OTOH its less politically acceptable to be homophobic now so who knows whether this chnge of heart is born out of expediency or not.

But I do think he's eminently qualified, in particular I appreciate his measures positions on Iran and Israel and the fact that he served, which lends him perspective on the consequences of his decisions. Perspective people like Runsfeld lacked.

No, that's a rather extreme position. But I addressed this. He appears to have had a change of heart. I do hope it's genuine.

Israeli Lobby is a common synonym for AIPAC. I'm not sure it's fair to label him anti-Jewish merely because he (likely unknowingly) referenced a term made infamous by an anti-Jewish individual.

In addition to what Dylan has said on the matter, I also think its important to note that back in the 90s, a conservative stance on homosexuality was basically required for political success among Republican politicians, so I'm not sure Hagel's old positions were genuine in the first place. Maybe they were, but really who cares? He's made it clear he doesn't feel that way now, and even if he's lying, such matters will never be an issue during his tenure as secretary of defense.

Anyway, I think we're screwing up this thread about the non's podcast by having the debate in here. I'm mobile ATM but someone should grab a link and start a proper thread on the topic.

His opinion was likely based on homophobia not on some transcendent perpsective on the need for tolerance of intolerance in international relations.....
