Reynolds reminds me of David Weber. Very cool on the macro level big ideas, not so great at characters and believable dialogue.
Edit: Wait, I'm mixing up Reynolds with Hamilton.
And yes, a thousand times yes on Vernor Vinge. Loved each book Galt mentioned...especially A Deepness in the Sky.
