Sorry for the one-liner, but it's true. If something doesn't make sense to do, in and of itself and in today's world, then it should be dropped like a bad habit (which it is).

that's cool and all and i agree but it's irrelevant to whether or not we have a real depth of culture. we're children on the world stage. to suggest otherwise is just nationalistic chest thumping.

Actually, I'd say that we're the 30-somethings. African nations are the children, because all they do is squable over their little areas - without ever thinking to the future. South America are the adolescents - they see that they want to get somewhere, they just have no idea how to do it. Europe is a boomer, stuck in the past and adamant that things were better way-back-when.

even african cultures go back pretty far. west africa was raising empires and collapsing before anyone knew where china was. and i wouldn't consider south or central america that much different from us. later independence dates but not as far as cultural development goes. i mean they arguably started earlier than us too.
