Yeah, I've got to disagree with the article on all points. If Japan had the bomb in WWII and the US did not, they would have used it on us instead of bombing Pearl Harbor to keep us out of the war. If the US had never developed nuclear weapons and Russia had, they would have destroyed the US in order to grow their holdings and avoid collapse. The author is looking at the world we have now and saying we don't need nuclear weapons, but the world we have now was shaped by the existence of nuclear weapons.

Nuclear weapons are why we have urban proxy wars. If there were no nuclear weapons at all, the US and Russia would almost certainly have had some very large direct armed conflicts.

NYT article from a known guy who wants to abolish WMDs. Can anyone say biased?

MAD has kept the peace between the US and the Soviets. The Cuban missile crisis was proof of that. Thats why I support Iran getting nukes because it will stabilize the mid east somewhat.
