Depends on the state, but teachers basically go through FBI background checks. Anything more than a class c misdemeanor makes a teacher ineligible unless it's been over 5-10 years, and felonies are considered automatic disqualifications. In fact, the only teachers with extensive records are usually old foggies. There's a few 50-60 year old teachers with DWI/DUIs from the 1980s when the government first got serious about the issue.
Teachers drink like sailors. A lot of my student teaching partners go to the college bars on Fridays to unwind. I see them there, heh. I'm sure some high school kid will sneak in one day, see a teacher, news will travel, and that teacher will be reprimanded (I call it 'employer bullying' because that's what it is).
