the northern cities vowel shift is north of NY/NJ. it's pretty much western new york straight across to minnesota. plus the NYC accent thing is localized pretty heavily in staten island and a few other spots. if i didn't have family in the former i could honestly say i would have never heard the "new york" accent in person.

I don't know any non-NYC New Yorkers so if that's the case all the way then I didn't know. Like I said, it's just a slight twinge. I've met Minnesotans and that can be pretty heavy.
