sometime a couple of centuries ago britain, if i'm remembering correctly, made an organized effort to change from rhotic to non-rhotic.

yeah but it certainly wasn't 19th century century non-rhotic brits colonizing the new world, which is why all accents derived from british here would be from rhotic british.

It was Brits from everywhere colonizing everywhere. New York is of course named after the northern city of York (ah never mind I'm wrong about this one, this makes me sad). And in Argentina there's even a Welsh speaking area, which always makes me laugh.

i'm not specifying accents, i'm saying rhotic vs non rhotic. british was rhotic when colonizing began en masse.
