The BBC has to make money from somewhere, you know. The licence fee doesn't go far.
Programmes such as Hustle and now Ripper Street make a lot of money allowing amazing programmes such as Africa to be made.
ITV are getting in on the act, too. Downton Abbey is raking it in, and I expect Mr Selfridge will do the same.
