Precocity is right though: and the reason everything is being forced into the either/or is primarily because of the media, who need the good/bad WWE narrative to peddle the conflict (which means ratings) and of course both them and the parties don't want any third option anywhere near the debates (hello, Ron Paul!) because the American people might start thinkin' there's alternatives.

And we don't want that!

My problem with ideologies is that they prescribe means without consideration as to whether they deliver the ends.

I'm really struggling to think of an issue I'd be classed as conservative on, especially by US standards. I take healthcare for granted etc.

Progressive taxes
Universal healthcare
Democracy (yup I know everyone accepts this in the Western world but still).
Immigration (in general)
Proportional Representation
Unions
Nearly all social issues (euthanasia I guess I'm a bit more conservative, but still less so than most people)
Equality of opportunity
Environmental protection

Things I'm against:

Nuclear weapons (utopian vision)
Guns
Large scale military interventions
In many instances, the free market
Monarchy
