I made a joke on Facebook when Colorado legalized marijuana that weed should be legal so that Twinkies are brought back. I would never encourage drug use by teenagers, although to be honest I overhear my kids talk about pot and alcohol all the time in the hall and I just ignore it. I have quite a few students each semester who have drug problems. I make sure the parents or counselors already know about the issue, and then talk to them privately because I've lost good friends to drugs (death, prison, and rehab). A lot of the kids really need to sit down with someone who has been there in those situations. I never indict myself, but I've been pretty much heard everything at this point. I won't feed them to the BS War on Drugs lines, but I will try to be a voice of reason. For example I had a student who mixed alcohol and benzos, then drove around to friends houses. I really set my foot down on trying to talk to him about this because he already totaled his car and I knew two people who got DUIs/DWIs that way.
But anyway, the football team receives large amounts of money. We just rebuilt our stadium a few years ago. Soccer and volleyball probably get far less.
Do you guys think a class fundraiser would be appropriate for a regular class? We have some AP teachers who bend the rules and offer 'voluntary' AP classes on Saturdays which really aren't voluntary, so I'm thinking it would be okay. I just really don't like the idea of forcing poor kids to pay up.
