Just like with movies and music, my list constantly changes, even month to month. But the 5 that come to the top of my head that remain pretty constant are....

The runners up are endless. I see the criticisms people have of him, but Don Delillo will always have a special place with me. Some of the prose in Mao II and The Names is just godly. Some others for me would be Stanley Crouch, Paul Theroux, Tom Robbins, Dylan Thomas, Shakespeare, Anthony Burgess, Hemingway, James Baldwin, the list goes on.
