Yeah, not to get all Dark Knight lol, but to me it just shows that people are really hungry for a larger-than-life figure to expose police corruption and give them a taste of their "own medicine" (ie: killing unarmed civilians). Even if it requires some cognitive dissonance to get past the fact that this guy didn't set up a very sturdy moral high ground for himself. It's not too dissimilar from the OJ trial really. It wasn't whether or not he was guilty, but that he represented some broader abstract idea about fairness in the justice system. Similarly, you see the cultural lines being drawn in this country over this event.
