From each according to his ability, to each according to his need or deed contradicts getting something for nothing but an actual communist operates in an economic sphere that is completely different from our own and any notion of 'work' is irrelevant. Anarcho-communists like Dharma favor abolishing work through an elimination of most scarcity and reserving the remaining scarce resources (land) to some non-market economy like energy credits.
A lot of former communists in the Soviet Union have wildly conservative perspectives on economic issues.
