I agree. Contempt of court should only apply if a person is not willing to follow the judges orders or in the most extreme cases of verbal abuse. I think it is fundamentally immoral to sentence a person to jail for something as petty as an obscene gesture.
Further, wasn't there a recent court case that held flipping off the cops wasn't a punishable offense? Because that should also apply to judges.

Consequences? Absolutely.
A month in jail for verbal abuse? No.
A week? No.
A day or two? Sure, fine. But there is a difference between continuously disrupting a trial or appearance and getting angry at the end of it. A big difference.
I think this issue separates the authoritarian from the rest pretty concisely.
